An important element of any liturgy is the music. Singing is always an integral part of the Church's worship. Music is prayer. St. Augustine said that "singing is praying twice!" Therefore, couples preparing for music need to pay special attention to the music chosen for their wedding liturgy. Remember that weddings in the Catholic Church are liturgies first and foremost, and the goal of the liturgy is to give worship to God.
Music must be appropriate for Catholic liturgies; secular music or even popular Christian praise and worship music is not liturgical, and therefore not permitted. Pre-recorded music is also not permitted. Couples marrying at the Co-Cathedral will be given plenty of music options from the selection of approved liturgical music.
Preparing Music Selections:
Couples marrying at the Co-Cathedral are usually contacted by the Co-Cathedral Music staff a few months prior to their wedding date. Couples may also contact the Music Associate via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. It is best to be in communication with the music office at least 4 months prior to your wedding date.
The Cathedral Music office conducts a Couples Music Seminar 5-6 times every year, usually on a weekday evening. This seminar is for couples only. Attendance is limited and ALL couples must meet certain requirements and be pre-approved before attending. Once approved, any couples able to attend will be sent a notice of confirmation for their assigned class.
The Initial Couples Class is a Pre-requisite for this music seminar.
Please make the music office aware of your circumstance if you do not live in or around the Houston area. You will still have an opportunity to select music for your wedding.
All couples marrying at the Co-Cathedral are required to use the Cathedral parish organist and cantor to lead the music; no exceptions. The fee for the musicians is NOT included in the Reservation Fee for the use of the Co-Cathedral; these are separate required fees and must be paid 90 days prior to the wedding.
