The Patricians: An Adult Catholic Discussion Group
New season begins October, 2017!
Meetings occur the 3rd Tuesday of the Month
Time: 7 - 9 p.m.
Place: Cathedral Centre
*There are no meetings on Holy Days of Obligation, holidays, or other days with civic or religious duties; in these months, meetings are moved to the following week when these exceptions occur.
What is the Patricians?
The Society of the Patricians was established in 1955. It is an educational outreach program of the Legion of Mary. Its purpose is to build up the religious knowledge of the people, to teach them how to explain themselves and to encourage them to apostleship. It is designed to enable, empower, and encourage the lay Catholic to articulate the teachings of the Church with confidence and orthodoxy (right teaching).
Who should come?
The Patricians is for Catholic men and women only. Adult non-Catholics seeking to learn more about the Catholic Church and its teachings should inquire more properly into the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.). It is not necessary, expected, or implied that one must join the Legion of Mary in order to participate.
What is the commitment?
Come as often as you can - whether it's every month, or every other month. The only commitment you make is when you agree to present on a topic, to be present and come prepared with your paper on your assigned day.
What is the cost?
Participants are asked to assist as they can with monetary support for snacks. Since this is a monthly meeting, expenses are minimal. There is no registration fee.
While there is no "textbook" to buy for these meetings, one should already have a Catholic Bible, and the official U.S.C.C.B. Catechism of the Catholic Church. Another great resource is the "United States Catholic Catechism for Adults," which is a textbook based on the official catechism. The Catechism for Adults contains more references particular to the United States, discussion questions, and expanded discussions.
Learning to use these resources will help the adult Catholic to learn (or re-learn) their faith at an adult-level maturity. It is highly recommended by the pastor for participants of The Patricians to use these resources in preparing their papers, as well as preparing for the group discussions.
